Reading peptide research without the hype

A clear-eyed introduction to the science and the questions worth asking.

Begin with the study model

Cell studies can suggest mechanisms. Animal studies explore effects in whole organisms. Carefully designed human studies are needed to assess whether findings translate into meaningful clinical outcomes.

Look at what was measured

A change in a biomarker is not automatically a change in symptoms, function or long-term health. Read the outcome measures before reading the headline.

Ask about controls and replication

Small sample sizes, weak controls, selective reporting and a lack of independent replication can make early findings appear more conclusive than they are.

Keep the uncertainty

Terms such as “may,” “associated with” and “in a mouse model” are not filler. They tell you how far the evidence goes.
